What it means
A pretentious fool: someone who puts on airs, stands on ceremony, or thinks they are above the people around them. This snobbery sense is the primary one in Cuba and is what separates it from the same word elsewhere.
More loosely, an idiot — someone who behaves stupidly or gets in the way.
Literally: Shit-eater.

Where it comes from
A transparent compound of comer and mierda. In Cuba the 'affected, self-important' reading dominates; in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico it leans more purely towards 'idiot'. The derived noun comemierdería names the behaviour.
