   Dude, mate, guy. Used both to address a friend directly and to refer to any unnamed man.

   Used as a sentence-final particle with no lexical content at all, marking the speech as casual — roughly the function of 'man' in English.

   This is by far its most frequent use among young speakers.

   Idiot, fool. The original sense, still live when the tone is hostile.

Literally: Ox — from buey, a castrated bull.

  Note: Pure filler — deleting güey changes nothing but the register.

Where it comes from

From buey, 'ox'. Calling a man an ox implied he was slow-witted, or a cuckold — the animal being castrated. The insult wore down through constant use into a neutral address term, the same path English 'dude' and 'bloke' took.
