What it means
A fit of rage. Coger un berro is to lose your temper, comprehensively and visibly.
Estar emberrado, to be in a foul mood; emberrarse, to work yourself into one. Used of adults and of toddlers alike.
Literally: Watercress.

Where it comes from
The connection to berro, 'watercress', is opaque and probably coincidental; a more likely source is the verb berrear, 'to bellow or bawl', which describes the behaviour exactly. Cuban speech treats the noun as basic and the verb emberrarse as derived, which supports the berrear account only loosely.
