What it means
Coastal interjection of surprise, disbelief or complaint — 'wow', 'no way', 'oh come on', depending on delivery. Concentrated in Barranquilla and the Atlántico department.
Frequently paired: '¡eche, no joda!' is the full Barranquillero reaction to almost anything.

Where it comes from
Origin unclear. A euphemistic clipping of a coarser word is the usual guess, on the pattern that gives Spanish miércoles for mierda, but no derivation is established. It is purely spoken and almost never written outside dialogue.
