What it means
Fun, a laugh, a good time — Bavarian and Austrian. 'Eine Gaudi' is a specific occasion of fun, not the abstract quality.
The gender is unsettled: die Gaudi in Bavaria, das Gaudi in much of Austria and Swabia. Both are correct in their own place.

Where it comes from
From Latin gaudium, 'joy', by way of the macaronic Latin of students and monastery schools — the same route that gave Gaudeamus igitur. It survived in the Catholic south and never crossed north.
