padre

adjectiveInformal

A Mexican Spanish slang term. Browse all Mexican slang.

What it means

  1. Cool, great, nice. Interchangeable with chido in most contexts, and slightly softer — it is the version a parent is likelier to use.

Literally: Father.

Examples with translations

  • ¡Qué padre tu departamento!

What a great apartment you have!

  • Estuvo padrísima la fiesta.

    The party was absolutely brilliant.

Note: The superlative padrísimo is extremely common.

Where it comes from

An ordinary noun turned adjective of approval — the same move English made with 'ace' and 'boss'. The superlative padrísimo intensifies it, and qué padre is the fixed exclamatory form.
