What it means

  1. Bluster; a threat or boast with nothing behind it. 'Eso e' puro aguaje' is the standard verdict on someone loudly promising what they will not do.

  2. The verb aguajear is to make that kind of noise, and an aguajero is the person who habitually does.

Where it comes from

Standard Spanish aguaje is a tidal surge or a rush of water — a lot of movement, gone in a moment. The Dominican sense keeps the image and applies it to talk. The word exists elsewhere in the Caribbean but is used far more in Dominican speech.
