What it means

  1. Talk to me — a greeting rather than a request for information. Answering a phone with it is normal, and so is saying it to someone walking past.

  2. Go ahead, I'm listening. The literal sense survives and is distinguished only by context.

    Hey man! How's it going?

  • Dime a ver qué e' lo que hay pa' hoy.

    So tell me what the plan is for today.

    Note: 'Dime a ver' is the expanded form and sounds slightly warmer.

Where it comes from

The ordinary imperative of decir with two clitics attached. Its use as a pure greeting is Caribbean and the elaborated versions — dímelo cantando, dímelo papá — are Dominican embellishments on it.
